Thursday, July, 31 -- What's Happening about Town

Just a couple of things to do to kick off your vacation. Art show and sale by the Eastham Painters guild, 9 AM to 5:30 PM at the Schoolhouse Museum, Route 6, Eastham.

The Guild of Chatham Painters is having an outdoor art show Thursday and Friday at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, Main Street, Chatham.

The French Cable Station hosting guided tours 1 -- 4 PM, at 41 South Orleans Road (Route 28), Orleans. History and equipment of telegraph cable from France to the US. Open through Sunday.

If Wildlife sightings are part of your perfect vacation, things are starting to heat up in the shorebird world. Numbers and varieties are increasing as are rarities and uncommon shorebirds showing up.

The first rarity of the season was a Ruff spotted at the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary in Wellfleet. Also spotted was a Wilson's Phalarope. Although the Wilson's Phalarope breeds in Massachusetts, they can still be difficult to find away from breeding grounds.

South Beach continues to bring in large numbers of shorebirds. In Chatham this past week those seen were: black-bellied plover, semipalmated plover, piping plover, American oystercatcher, greater yellowlegs, lesser yellowlegs, willet, spotted sandpiper, whimbrel, husonain godwit, ruddy turnstone, red knot, sanderling, semipalmated sandpiper, least sandpiper, white-rumped sandpiper, dunlin and short-billed dowitcher. That surely is a full days exploration.

Right here around the corner from the Whalewalk Inn at Nauset Marsh a good number of shorebirds are being spotted.

Not only are the birds plentiful, but the whales continue to dazzle guests with their numbers and their antics. Humpback whales still number from the 40s to 60s, while the Minke and fin whales continue to put in a nice appearance. There have even been Sea Turtle sightings and if you are fortunate enough to spot one, please report it to 1-888-732-8878.

For more information please call the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary at 508-349-2615. If you want to take a one night trip to Cape Cod, we do have a couple of one-nights availabel -- and don't forget the 15% discount.

Play Reviews

Debi Boucher Stetson says, "It's dark, it's saucy, it's gritty and it's fun. The Academy of Performing Arts' production of 'Cabaret' is everything the play should be and then some, with a tremendous cast dishing up an evening of great singing and dancing infused with raw emotion." See this production through August 16th.

Ellen Petry Whalen asks, "What do you get when you cross the sixties television show 'Laugh-in' with a comic strip? 'Snoopy! the Musical' at the Chatham Drama Guild. Quick scene changes and colored backdrops reflect the short, classic, comic strip style of Charles Schultz' "Peanuts," about the optimistically-challenged Charlie Brown and his independent beagle, Snoopy. This all-kid cast gives a quick pace performance and is true to Schultz' comic strips. The re viewer's children liked the play. It is in Chatham until August 17.

Michelle Koch says of 'Dirty Rotten Scoundrels', " Overwhelmingly, the audience was amused by the off-color banter and coarse references. 'Dirty Rotten Scoundrels' played Broadway for over 600 performances beginning in 2005, and since then has toured cities worldwide. It's all here, catch music, inventive lyrics, stylish sets and wardrobe, wonderful instrumentalists, lovely voices, dancing fun and cheeky asides." Plying through august 2nd. (Nor for children.)

Sue Harrison reviewed 'Wild Party' playing at The Provincetown Theater this summer, also not recommended for children. She says it is "A tightly choreographed, uber-spirited son-and-dance extravaganza that floats over the dark underbelly of passion gone wrong. Broadway musical fans will find what they are looking for in 'The Wild Party'.

TRAVEL & LEISURE, AUGUST 2008

Travel & Leisure, August 2008 Issue has a really wonderful article on Cape Cod. It is "The Best of Cape Cod" With a lifetime of memories—and an up-to-the-minute address book, from Falmouth to Provincetown — Laura Begley plots the course to an iconic American vacation.

Here is what the article has to say about The Whalewalk Inn & Spa:

"All the rooms at Eastham’s Whalewalk Inn & Spa are furnished with antiques; the most romantic is the tiny Salt Box Cottage. Ask the owners about the best hike and they’ll send you to a place most locals have never heard of." Besides that we have our sign pictured on one of the pages and we are mentioned in the list for the Outer Cape and where to stay. You can see the article, if you don't receive the magazine, at http://www.travelandleisure.com/articles/the-best-of-cape-cod

So thank you Laura Begley for the wonderful mention. It certainly is appreciated.
