Forrest and Janice worked really hard over the Labor Day Weekend and won two nights in our Pent House Suite. They answered the most questions correctly on the Scavenger Hunt. We used the booklet supplied by the Friends of the Cape Cod National Seashore and had an early give away at the Inn. Have been handing out booklets to our guests, so if you still have yours with your answers, be sure to send it to the address in your booklet. You will be eligible for prizes from the Friends. PAN MASS Race -- A Thrill a Minute as Riders Toured Cape Cod

The Pan Mass Challenge was very exciting to watch, and those riding were grateful for the spectators. Guests at the Inn were happy to cheer the riders on to Provincetown. Did get to wave to our friend, Karen, who was riding in memory of her mother, but did not see Ed go by. He must have been in a group that passed during breakfast. Congratulations to all!

Nauset Marsh Trail winds along the edge of the Salt Pond and Nauset Marsh, crosses fields and returns to the visitor center through a recovering forest. Last night the grand kids, my friend, Erika and I went to Nauset Light Beach. It was great. On Wednesdays they give tours of the lighthouse -- looking up made your head spin. You could climb all the way up to the light -- really cool, as the kids said.

We packed a light dinner with Twizzlers for desert. What a dinner view! The tide was out and the waves were very light -- just right for 11 and 14 year olds to body surf. They had a blast -- and one didn't even want to go in the water. Now he is hooked! And, they are ready to go back, just as Erika and I -- we enjoyed watching the kids, chatting and taking in the beauty of the beach and ocean.

July 4th weekend is just around the corner. At the Whalewalk Inn & Spa, we are getting ready for all the festivities. Friday, July 1st (with a rain date of July 2) will be our famous complimentary holiday picnic followed by fireworks at Rock Harbor.

Spring Restaurant Week on Cape Cod -- Great Food at Great Prices for your Romantic Getaway

Spring restaurant week just ended on Cape Cod. It was a great week of dining experiences. We actually went out and enjoyed a superb dinner at the Brewster Fish House. We went with repeat guests at the Inn, and we had a great time to go along with the wonderful food.

The Brewster Fish House offered a three-course dinner for $35 dollars. Three of us ordered the Tempura Oysters on a seaweed salad. The oysters were done perfectly -- not mushy, but not dried out either. For dinner we had Salmon on a Potato Puree with a lemon butter sauce and sprinkled with greens. The salmon was cooked perfectly on the grill -- I like my on the well done side, which it was, but they still kept it moist. It was fabulous. For desert we had a scoop of Chocolate Mousse and a Goat Cheese and Marscapone Cheesecake. Being stuffed by this time, we still found room to consume the whole desert. The fourth person in our party ordered the Brewster Fish House Chowdah. They brought out a huge bowl, but he managed to eat the whole bowl and enjoyed every bit of it. He then had the Cod for his main dish and it was lightly done and absolutely delicious. He sampled the Creme Brulee and was pleased with his choice.

We have also gone to Chillingsworth, Nauset Beach Club and Cape Sea Grille. All of these restaurants serve wonderful meals at a price that can't be beat. Mark your calendar for next year and be sure to take advantage of these wonderful eateries and fabulous discounts.

Over the years, we have slowly worked our way east on Cape Cod, seeking our prefect place. About ten years ago we discovered the Whalewalk Inn and that brought an end to our seeking. Over these ten years, our spring and fall vacations are spent at the Whalewalk Inn. Our most recent visit was May 10 through May 13 with the next one scheduled for late October.

The Inn is clean, quite, comfortable, tastefully decorated and well maintained. The beds are very comfortable and we have slept very well – better than at home.Elaine, Kevin, Brendan, Heather and the staff are friendly, knowledgeable, accessible and fun.

Breakfast is creative, delicious and filling. They are very accommodating to my dietary restrictions. We do tend to get into a two meal a day mode, feeling no need for lunch, except maybe a Ben & Jerry’s ice cream cone.

We both use the exercise facilities in the spa, usually late in the afternoon in an attempt to somewhat offset the dinners that we have in our favorite places in Orleans. I especially enjoy the endless pool.

Over the past several years my wife and I have traveled the world and stay at some of the best five star hotels in places like Hong Kong, Shanghai, Amsterdam, Milan, Venice, New York, San Francisco and after all that the Whale Walk Inn is still our favorite place to stay!

This last trip was our third time at the Inn and we continue to love it. Elaine, Kevin and the family get to know their guests, remember your name, and work hard to make your stay as relaxing, memorable and personalized as possible. On our most recent trip, one morning as we sat down for breakfast, Brendan asked us which kind of juice we would like to have. My wife responded with "mango juice" and Brendan looked a little confused as he did not list that as an option, apologized anyway and said they did not have mango juice. My wife was perfectly happy with orange juice. The next morning when we sat down Brendan brought her a big glass of mango juice, just for her. It is just one small example of how they work hard to make you feel special while you are staying with them.

Happy New Year to all. We, at the Inn, had a quiet welcome to 2011 shared with children and grandchildren. Hope every one's year will be happy, healthy and prosperous.

At the Inn we are in the process of painting, deep cleaning, tile work, redesigning the website and more. Getting ready to make 2011 the best year ever at The Whalewalk Inn & Spa. The Cape Cod Chamber is also working on many activities to make your visit to the Cape a memorable one. April is Golf Month on Cape Cod.

The kick off will begin on March 25-27 with a golf expo at the Hampton Inn. Here you will be given the opportunity to see the latest in golf equipment, golf demonstrations, meet local golf pros, enjoy golf seminars and see what packages will be offered. Jump start you golf season by playing on Cape Cod in April.

When you make your accommodations at the Inn, we will be happy to arrange your golf times also. There are some amazing courses close by -- The Captain's Course, which has two courses Starboard or Port, each 18 holes to challenge your game. If you only like 9 holes, there is Chequessette Golf Club and Highland Light Golf Course, the first links course in the US. Both are great courses, but for Highland bring lots of balls, of course, if you are like me you won't need a lot -- don't hit the ball far enough to lose it. Working on the distance though. Also, there is a 9 hole course in Chatham that is a lot of fun. Blue Rock is a great executive course -- parred my first hole there.

Farmer's Almanac says 2011 will be a dry spring, so make your reservations early and pack the clubs for a fun and scenic game on any one of our many courses.

Cape Cod Wineries, Breweries and Cape Cod Potato Chips

This weekend was Truro's Treasure Weekend. They have a great antique and flea market on Saturday and Sunday. I found some really pretty celluloid boxes. I always remember my Aunt Olive, whose doll now lives at the Inn, having a set on her dresser. I was fascinated by them, then and now. This year one of our guests found an oil painting on wood. Looks like something he will be able to take to the Antiques Road Show.

The festivities close with the annual "Grape Stomp and Jazz Festival" at the Truro winery. Yes, I did say winery. I know when you think of wineries, you may first think of the New York Finger Lakes , California's Napa Valley, of course, but rarely would you think of Cape Cod. Well, about 20 minutes from the Whalewalk Inn is the Truro Winery. From the road you will see clusters of purple Cabernet franc and chardonnay grapes, and further up the blue-tinged Merlot grapes. Dave Roberts and his family bought the winery in 2007. They make a selection of six different wines which are sold all over the Cape, especially at Windmill Liquors, right around the corner from the Inn. So add a tour and wine tasting at the winery as part of your stay at the Inn on Cape Cod. There is a charge for the tasting, but you do get a nice commemorative wine glass to add to your collection.

If you prefer organically grown products, there is a winery in Falmouth, the Cape Cod Winery. The Lazzaris have cultivated a vineyard of not only European grape varieties, but several French-American hybrids. They grow grapes without using any pesticides.

If you are taking a day trip to Nantucket, there is a winery there also, The Nantucket Vineyard. Here they make a variety of white and red wines with grapes from Washington State. Next door houses the Cisco Brewers and Triple Eight Distillery.

If beer is your thing to make or just to drink, you must visit Cape Cod Beer in Hyannis. Some of their choices of beer are Cape Cod Red, India Pale Ale, Beach Blonde, Summer Ale, Harvest, Porter, the award winning Dunkell-Weizen, Berry Merry and Old Man Winter. Tours are on Saturday at 1:00 pm and Tuesdays at 11:00 am. They sell Growlers, which is a large refillable jug of beer, filled right from the tap. Just remember to wash your Growler before you get it refilled. (The Cape Cod Potato Chip Factory is close by for another informative tour, and free chips. Can also buy them at a discounted price.)

Cannot believe that it is the middle of September already. Seems like we were just hunkering down for Earl--who by the way, got way more hype than he deserved. We had rain from 8:30 pm to 4:00 am, and could have served breakfast outdoors, it was that beautiful the next day. Unfortunately, we had all the furniture tied up, but have been having breakfast outside since.

The weather is really beautiful right now. It is those clear bright days and cool nights. The moon seems bigger than ever and it is only a half moon. Soon we will have a harvest moon to brighten our sky.

Carnival was a lot of fun. There were the most floats ever and everyone seemed to have a great time -- parade revelers and onlookers alike. All of us from the Inn had a good time. After the parade we drove to Wellfleet and enjoyed the bounty at Pearl. We had one of their signature drinks, the Wellfleet Pearl Harbor. After dinner we headed home draped in carnival jewelry and memories of a great meal with even greater friends.

One of our fun days out is the Carnival Parade in Provincetown. This year's theme is "Jungle Fantasy," so don your best Tarzan and Jane costume and join in the fun. There is a lot of laughter, singing, dancing, candy tossing, and great costuming. The parade begins promptly at 3:00 PM on August 19th at the beginning of Commercial Street. Last year Forever Plaid was at the Cape Playhouse in Dennis. This year the cast returns for their rendition of Plaid Tidings. Four 50 style singers come down form Heaven to fulfill their dream of performing a holiday show. Perry Como even has them on his show, and of course, no holiday show dream is complete without being on the Ed Sullivan Show. This show will certainly bring you to your feet in appreciative applause.

If you go to our recipe's page on our website, there is a recipe for our Bake Omelet. It is our most often asked for recipe by guests. So have made quite a few copies of it. It is also a great recipe to make for our friends who need a gluten free diet. Here is a serving for one -- if you need a break from your regular gluten free diet choices, or are having company and want to have the same main course as your guests. It is so simple and so good. You won't know the difference from the one made with Bisquick.

Serves 1 Bake at 350 for 45 minutes
1 Egg
2 Tablespoons cottage cheese
1/4 cup white cheddar cheese, grated
2 Tablespoons Rice Pancake Mix (my favorite is Pamela's)
1 Tablespoon melted butter
1 Tablespoons milk

Mix all ingredients. Pour into a vegetable sprayed ramekin. Bake and serve.

Had a gluten free guest this past week and she thoroughly enjoyed the muffins. Make them according to package directions, but add the same things as you would for regular muffins. So she had a blueberry muffin, one with shredded cantaloupe and a strawberry banana muffin. Said they were all great and that I should let you know that we do bake and cook gluten free at the Whalewalk Inn, so be sure and let us know of any dietary restrictions that you may have and we will try our best to meet your needs.

Cape Cod National Seashore Statistics

When you call the Whalewalk Inn & Spa and you ask about beaches, we will tell you that you are a 10 minute drive to the Cape Cod National Seashore Visitor's Center. They will give you directions, maps and general information on what the Seashore has to offer. Here are the highlights: Six beaches, 11 self-guided nature trails, nine lighthouses, picnic area and daily activities. Most things are free which makes for a great day at the Cape. We have a great daily paper, Cape Cod Day, which you can pick up on arrival to help you plan your daily activities.

After a long day of exploring and a great dinner, make plans for a night at the theatre or one of the outdoor concerts that dot the Cape. The Melody Tent tomorrow will have Abba the Music and Melissa Etheridge will be there on Friday. The Beach Boys will be coming in August -- Surfin' USA.

One other site that you may want to visit is the restored Blacksmith Shop in Brewster on the Drummer Boy Property -- Thursdays through Saturdays 1 to 4. Here you can learn how tools were made in the second half of the 18th century. What I found amazing was that the forge, the structure that holds the fire, is made of wood. Most that you see today are stone or brick. It is rare to see a wood one that has survived all this time.

Summer on the Beaches of Outer Cape Cod

Doug the Quahog has the first week under his belt with a positive prediction of a sunny summer on Cape Cod. The 4th of July weekend was absolutely beautiful and the forecast for the week is more of the same.

We had our 4th of July picnic in conjunction with the Orleans fireworks. We smoked some ribs, chicken and beef brisket. Had some great side dishes to go along with the smoked meats. Guests and neighbors enjoyed the evening. After dinner we all walked to the fireworks. They really had some beautiful ones this year and everyone was aaawing and ooohing.

Receive a new daily paper now that tells what is going on around the Cape, today and tomorrow. It is great and keeps us all well informed as to what is available for fun in the sun. The guests have had great days at the beaches, and all are getting tanned .

Found the greatest trip tomorrow evening in Wellfleet -- sounds very romantic and educational, too.

Tomorrow, June 25th, at 7:00 PM you can explore interconnected freshwater ponds in Wellfleet at a magical time of day on a moonlight canoe trip. The naturalist guided tour, sponsored by Mass Audubon's Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, is 2 and 1/2 hours long and runs between Gull and Higgins Ponds. Equipment is provided.

Cape Cod Special Rates

When you come and stay at the Inn and are traveling to Wellfleet, be sure to add the Pearl Restaurant to your list of places to eat. They have a great view of the harbor, and their food is delish. We went there yesterday and had steamers that were small and seasoned to perfection. The guys shared Wellfleet Oysters. They said the hot sauce could have been hotter, but they did enjoy a shallot and vinegar dip with the oysters. The chowdah was smokey and flavorful. We had some more appetizers and lobster rolls to share. The tuna sushi mi was amazing, and the crab cake to die for with a nice grilled flavor and no filler. Their lobster rolls were all meat and just a teeny bit of mayonnaise. Have you ever had a Pearl Harbor? Had my first yesterday and it was really good -- not sure if they did anything differently to make it a Wellfleet Pearl Harbor.

Today Kevin and I went picnic shopping in Hyannis. We decided to have lunch at Baxter's. It was a great setting right on the channel. Here you could watch the pleasure boats and the ferries coming and going. The sun was shining, the temperature fantastic and the food was yummy. President Kennedy used to pull up to Baxter's by boat and have lunch. He was a great fan of Baxter's and we will surely recommend it to our guests. Their menu boasts of all the great food that Cape Codders and visitors seek out. We had a lobster crab cake as an appetizer and both of us could not resist the call of the fried clam strips. There was chowdah' on the menu along with lobster rolls, fried fish, calamari, and steak and hamburgers for the land lubbers.

We did get our shopping done for the Memorial Day picnic, found a new couch for Barn Suite 2, so now are just awaiting its delivery. So come down and see us and experience all that the Cape has to offer. OH! and now you can book on line and receive confirmation immediately.

Tea on Cape Cod and the Whalewalk Inn & Spa

Just thinking about our first tea party ever at the Whalewalk Inn & Spa. It was to celebrate our granddaughter's 13th birthday. Party favors were antique tea cups found at some of our favorite haunts in Orleans. We served teas from Harney's Tea Company and "Uncle" Brendan was our charming server. We made heart shaped peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, tarragon, grape and chicken sandwiches, radishes with tarragon butter, chocolate covered strawberries, tomatoes, mozzarella and basil on bagel chips, hummus and cucumber sandwiches and a beautiful red velvet cake with purple fondant and silver stars -- as requested by the birthday girl.

Just as fine London restaurants are known for their afternoon tea , so is Cape Cod. Now you don't have to travel across the pond for this experience. Here we have some really quaint tea rooms for a light lunch or just a sweet treat in the afternoon.

Village Tea Room at Borsari Gallery, owned by Bob and Kathy Bosari, is on Route 6A in Dennis. Their converted gallery opened in December with Geroge Davidson from Scotland as its proprietor and tea master.

Off of route 28, Jeni Hennessey, a native of Fareham, England, owns the Tea Shoppe at Mashpee Commons. Here men, as well as women, enjoy her hearty lunch fare such as shepherd's pie.

Paula Hegarty, owner of Dunbar Tea Shop and Tea Room says that tea is very relaxing and therapeutic. Her shop is located on Water Street in Sandwich. This converted carriage house serves about twenty different kinds of loose-leaf teas, and the owners are developing their own blend with cranberry and essence of almond.

Beth's Special Teas Bakery & Cafe in Sandwich center is an Americanized tea and coffee/sandwich shop. Owned by Beth Giampietro, her place makes you feel like you are at Grandma's house.

So come down and enjoy the beauty of Cape Cod and the National Seashore and share in its heritage found in our local tea rooms.

Experience Cape Cod Restaurant Week -- May 17 to May 23

Last night was girl's night out, so Heather and I went to Chillingsworth and there met innkeeper friends, Margaret and Rebecca. We took advantage of Restaurant Week and headed out to Brewster. We had a fabulous dinner for $25 per person. I started with Escargot, followed by Herb Roasted Pork Loin over mashed potatoes and spinach with a wonderful glaze of Rosemary-Fig Sauce. For desert, I had Pistachio Creme Brulee. It was great!

Some of the other menu choices ordered were Crab Crepes with Grilled Shrimp, Golden and Red Beet Carpaccio with Marinated Goat Cheese, Fig & Beet Drizzle, Miso Salmon with Daikon-Cucumber Relish, Creamy Mushroom Soup, and Flounder.

Drinks and gratuity were extra, but the Melon and Mango Martinis were delish!

Cape Cod Maritime Days -- Ferry to Nantucket

Yesterday, had an amazing day on Nantucket. The Steamship Authority put together an outing to see Nantucket. We left the inn at 9:30 (so you can see Nantucket and still have breakfast), and we set sail at 11:00 AM -- you could probably leave a little later and still have plenty of time to get there, but we all had to meet at 10:30. The ride over took an hour, and it was delightful. We had lunch on the boat as that was part of their tour for us. We immediately got on buses and had a drive around the island. It was a beautiful day and we had a very nice tour driver. Then it was on to the Whaling Museum. It is a great museum and gives a great historical account of the industry. Kevin says he couldn't have made it through the first day on the ship with the stench alone. After the tour we had some time to see the shops, experience the cobblestone streets, and enjoy the beauty of the area. We embarked on the Iyannough at 3:15 and were back at the Inn by 5:15 -- even saw the Kennedy Compound from the water.

So if you are planning to come to Cape Cod and stay at the Inn, maybe you would like to add a day, so you can take a trip to Nantucket. Tomorrow will celebrate Maritime Days with a trip to Nantucket on the Hy-Line. They have an amazing day planned for their guests, including a trip to the Whaling Museum. Mother's Day on Cape Cod--Come Saturday and Shop for a Special Gift for Mom

Just returned from a Passport to New England meeting in the Berkshires. We were hosted by the Applegate Inn, and had a lovely time catching up with fellow innkeepers--and in spite of the beautiful weather, we did get some work done.

Cape Cod weather has been amazing and everything is beautifully green, the wisteria is in full bloom, and the lilacs have scented the whole property. So if you have no plans for the weekend, it isn't to late to come on down.

Two events on May 8th -- Not to Miss

In Hyannis you can shop for Mother's Day at the annual Shop Local Day. This biannual event encourages visitors and residents to check out Hyannis. There will be sales and specials all day -- a trip not to miss. Or, you can take a ride to the Rowley Gallery, 84 Route 6A, Orleans and experience "For the Love of Art" show. S & R Jewelry of Orleans will be on display along with original artwork. Mom's who come to this gala event will receive a gift. This past week Sandra from Chatham T Company and Marge's Place stayed at the inn. Marge's Place caters to the little people, while Chatham T Company caters to the adults. There are designer caps, belts, rain jackets, and she even carries Not Your Daughter's Jeans, which actually tuck in your tummy.

Brewster in Bloom--Parade, Arts and Antiques During the Day, Cape Theatre in the Evenings

Today starts Brewster in Bloom. Especially excited this year, as the grandsons will be marching in the Sunday Parade and the weather is supposed to be lovely. Look for the red head with the sax and the other red head with the bass drum -- probably the smallest drummer there. Also this weekend our grand daughter will be in the Nauset Middle School production of The Wizard of Oz. She will be dressed in green. Of course, there will be a lot of kids dressed in green, but she will be the pretty red head -- kind of runs in the family, and of course, those who have stayed at the Inn already know about all the red hair.

If you are looking for some serious theatre on the Cape "Eurydice" is at the Cape Rep, "Of Mice and Men" at the Orleans Academy of Performing Arts, "Edward II" at The Provincetown Theater, "Much Ado About Nothing" at Cape Cod Community College, and there are other performances throughout the Cape.

The Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra Classics V Austrian connections will be performed in Barnstable at the Performing Arts Center on Saturday and Sunday.

Feel like dancing -- well Head over to Joe's Beach Road Bar & Grill in East Orleans. Enjoy the music of The Rip It Ups, starting at 10:00 PM. Also music at the Lost Dog Pub on Friday at 9:30 PM. Check the Cape Cod Times for other musical entertainment.

This coming Wednesday head to the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History for a spring walk. Meet at 9:20 at the Museum for a trek on Morris Island that lasts for two hours. Beautiful scenery there. One of our favorite haunts for hiking.

Birders head up to the Massachusetts Audubon society' Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary for a great hike. That evening at 6:30 at the Truro Public Library learn about the Coastal Waterbird Program. Call 508-487-1125 for more information.

The antique vehicle show will be held on Saturday also. Prizes will be awarded after judging by a local garage owner. There will also be awards for Voter's Choice and the Chairperson's Choice Award. Labor Day Weekend on Cape Cod

Pack your bags for the traditional last weekend of summer -- although Cape Cod weather is amazing throughout all of September (bright blue sky, clean, clear air, high 70 days, low 60 nights). This weekend we are having our Labor Day Scavenger Hunt and first prize is a two-night stay in our Carriage House 5 or 6 rooms -- depending on availability. We still have a couple of rooms available -- three-night minimum, but have a couple of two-nights available.

After looking for all your scavenger treasures, we will celebrate the winners with a complimentary picnic. The menu will include smoked ribs, chicken, and beef brisket. Tour Cape Cod Lighthouses -- Stay Centrally at the Whalewalk Inn & Spa

Saviors of fishermen, sailors, and whalers, the lighthouses of Cape Cod

guided ships to safety. When planning your vacation, be sure to include the beautiful lighthouses of Cape Cod. The Northern end of the Cape was once spotted with 9 different lighthouses.

A 10 minute drive from the Inn will bring you to Nauset Light. This lighthouse has a red painted top to distinguish it from Chatham and Highland Light.

Continuing towards Nauset High School you will pass the Three Sisters Lighthouses. These three lighthouses were acquired by the National Parks Services, and were moved to their present sight in 1983. Restoration began in 1988. Work was completed in 1989 and they sit 150 feet apart in their original configuration.

Over on the Bay side of Cape Cod, there once stood the Billingsgate Light. Due to erosion that lighthouse no longer exists, but the shoal where it once stood offers great fishing. The Mayo Beach Light has been moved to California, but the foundation still exists at a private home in Wellfleet. There was also the Pamet Light at Snow's Beach, but nothing of it exists today. There isn't even a picture of it.

Traveling up Route 6 in Truro is the Highland Light. Tours are offered daily. The climb up offers amazing views of the Atlantic. It is part of the National Seashore and is an active light in aiding navigation. (Around it sits the first links golf course. Not only do you play golf, but you enjoy many wondrous vistas of the lighthouse and the ocean.)

Following along Route 6, you come next to Race Point Light. This lighthouse is actively used for navigation. The keeper's house and the whistle house have been restored and are available for overnight stays.

Wood End Light is built at the elbow of the sandbar in Provincetown. This lighthouse is fully automated by solar panels and batteries.

Long Point Light is situated at the very tip of Provincetown. The lighthouse works on solar power and the outlying buildings have all been taken down. This light also remains very active in navigation.

Golf Cape Cod--Eastham, Central to Great Golf Courses

Golfing on Cape Cod offers some unique experiences for both the novice and the fine tuned player. The vistas on some of the Cape courses are truly breathtaking, others take you through woods and over rivers, all the while challenging your abilities.

Brewster is the home of the Captains Golf Course (Port and Starboard) offering 36 holes and voted one of the best public golf courses in the Boston Area. Also, this course challenges the men, but is one of the top 100 women friendly golf courses in the Country. This environmentally friendly course is visually interesting, while still strategically challenging.

For a country club feel, playing at The Chequessett Yacht and Country Club is quite a treat. It is a nine hole course, and4 of those are very challenging (all those water traps). Hole number 3 with the steep incline can wear you down. However, once you are at the top, there is a great vista of Cape Cod Bay -- watching the sailboats from the top of three is worth the climb.

After you finish that 9 you can have lunch at the Bookstore in Wellfleet -- yummy oysters fresh from the Bay and great fish sandwiches. Now that your strength is restored, drive up to Highland Golf Links course, another 9 holes to challenge your techniques. The second hole has a tricky dog leg, but just aim left and you should be fine. Here, too, you have views to die for. Imagine playing with a lighthouse in the background, and then walking up a slight incline and the Atlantic is spread out before your eyes.

If par 3 courses are your favorite, Blue Rock Golf Course has some tricky holes, especially the ones that go over the water. The river must be paved in golf balls. There are some mean sand traps there too, with some large overhangs that get in the way of getting out of the trap. All in all, it is a fun course and can be a confidence booster. (Keeps one coming back to the game.)

Hyannis Golf Club is surrounded by woods, and has some of the best greens around. A lot of the fairways are surrounded on both sides with hills, sometimes to ones advantage and other times -- well, you know!

Summer theatre has been great. Just went to see Noises Off at the W.H.A.T. and it was delightful. Had dinner at Winslow's Tavern before the play and it was very tasty. Celebrate Father's Day on Cape Cod -- Fun at the Provincetown International Film Festival, Hyannis Chowdah and Car Show, and Cape Cod League Baseball

June 14th Kevin and I went to the Annual Cape Cod Maritime Museum Festival. We had a great time exploring the tall ships. We saw the Alabama out of Nantucket and the Peacemaker. Did find out that if you were looking for a great week of vacation at the Whalewalk Inn and have children from the ages of 9 to 16, the Alabama offers a week of sleep-aboard sailing. It sounded like a great vacation for the kids, while you were relaxing here and being pampered at the Inn.

This weekend is the Provincetown International Film Festival. There is a cadre of movies for every one's taste. So come on over and enjoy the fun. If Jazz is your preference, the 5th Annual Provincetown Jazz Festival is August 14-16 at the Provincetown Hight School. The 3rd Annual Provincetown Music Festival is September 19th. Make your reservations and come to the Cape for artistic fun.

Looking for something a little more sporty -- rent kayaks for three hours of fun searching the beaches, marshes and more. Free Adventures at the Cape Cod National Seashore in Eastham

The first official weekend of the season, Memorial Day Weekend, was certainly a lot of fun. The Memorial Day Picnic and first ever Scavenger Hunt went really well.

Kevin did a superb job with the ribs and chicken and the brisket was done to perfection. Tried a new German potato salad with bacon and a sweet and sour dressing, which was served warm. The whole 5 pounds was eaten. Erika, one of my friends from Germany, really liked it and asked for the recipe. She said in Germany they never had it warm. Showed her the old family cookbook from 1947. Now she can't wait to make it for their next gathering. We had a corn salad, Navy beans with parsley, scallions and white wine vinegar, sweet potato salad with peanut dressing, lemon vinaigrette pasta salad, watermelon and brownies for desert.

Dinner was followed by the awarding of Scavenger Hunt prizes. The grand prize went to Alan and Karla who earned the most points and gave us ideas for some new questions for the Labor Day Scavenger Hunt. They were pleased with their two-night stay gift certificate at the Inn. Better make your reservations early for Labor Day and get in on all the fun.

The next picnic coming up is Friday, July 3rd. This picnic will be held in conjunction with the fireworks at Rock Harbor. Come and enjoy all the great food and beautiful fireworks. After dinner we walk down to Rock Harbor, and the fireworks are right over head. You feel like you can almost touch them. Those that boom kind of reverberate through ones bones.

While waiting for the Whalewalk Inn summer events, the Cape Cod National Seashore has some programs to get summer rolling. The Seashore has a host of weekly events that are free and informative. Some do require advance reservations, and a couple do have fees (Canoe and Kayak trips).

Walk: Stormy Nights at 10:00 AM, for 1 hour for 1 mile. Join a ranger for a short walk to discuss some of the more famous ship wrecks that came ashore and discover whether anything remains of the Newcomb Hollow wreck that mysteriously appeared in the winter of 2007/2008. Meet at the Newcomb Hollow Beach parking area, off Ocean View Drive, Wellfleet. Through June 8 only.

Call the Salt Pond Visitor Center, 508-255-3421, EXT.0 for hiking information. Explore your Park leaves at varying times and the hike is 3 to 4 miles and takes up to 3 1/2 hours. You will join an experienced ranger and explore the beauty and variety of park destinations, resources and stories. You must be a good walker. Dress for the weather. Bring water, sunscreen and bug spray.

Walk: Lore of Nauset Marsh at 3:00 PM for 1 hour for 1 mile. Meet at the terrace at the Salt Pond Visitor Center, Eastham. Learn about this alluring place and what has drawn people to its shores for thousands of years.

Maritime Matinee: “The City that Lit the World”

If you are planning a day trip to Nantucket from the Inn, book out of Hyannis and you will be on Nantucket in no time flat. It is a 30 minute drive to Hyannis and 40 minutes by boat. DAFFODIL FESTIVAL WEEKEND
April 24 - 26, 2009

From early-April to mid-May, over three million daffodils of every color, shape and size will bloom on Nantucket Island. This blossoming, and the advent of spring itself, is the focal point of the Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Daffodil Festival.Originated by the late Jean MacAusland, a summer resident of Nantucket and former publisher of Gourmet magazine, the weekend has grown into a full-scale celebration of winter’s thaw, joyous for both islanders and visitors alike. Daffodils adorn the island’s roadsides, gardens and shop windows with blossoms of yellow, orange, white and even pale pink. The Daffodil Festival’s grand event, held on Saturday (Rain or Shine) is the Annual Antique Car Parade, featuring over 100 daffodil-bedecked antique cars (pre-registration necessary for participation.) After winding through town and across the island to the charming village of Siasconset, participants join residents and visitors for the Annual Daffodil Tailgate Picnic. Held on the lush lawns leading into the village the picnic boasts fare ranging from elaborate gourmet cuisine served on fine china to box lunches and burgers. Other highlights include the Nantucket Garden Club’s Annual Daffodil Show, Daffy Dog Parade, Children’s Daffodil Parade and The Daffy Hat Pageant.

A multi-faceted exploration of food and wine emphasizing Nantucket's historic celebration of all things gastronomic. Opening of the Dennis Lifesavers Exhibit

Maritime Matinee: “Around Cape Horn”

Take an armchair journey to Cape Horn during the last great days of commercial sail. “Around Cape Horn” was photographed in 1929 and depicts Captain Irving Johnson sailing aboard the massive bark, Peking. Maritime Days are a great spring treat full of activities for visitors and locals alike. Brewster in Bloom Weekend, the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd of May, has many fun-filled activities. Cape Cod Maritime Days begin on May 13th. The list below is only Saturday's activities and the rest of the activities will follow in future blogs.

Remember that at the end of Maritime Days is the Memorial Day Weekend. Here at The Whalewalk Inn & Spa, we will celebrate that weekend with our traditional picnic. A dozen potters represented in Clay: Works by Cape Cod Potters will present Gallery Talks at the Cape Cod Museum of Art on Thursday mornings, March 5, 12, 19 and 26; and April 2 and 9 at 11 am.

The potters will work in pairs, talking about both their own work and the work of their fellow Cape potters. Expect a range of ideas and styles to spread across the six Thursday mornings - from wood-firing by Joe McCaffery to raku by Lois Hirshberg to ash glazes by Hollis Engley. No two will be alike and, frankly, there may be differences of opinion between any two presenters, as well. It should be fun.

Clay: Works by Cape Cod Potters is a celebration of the diverse clay styles employed by potters who live and work on Cape Cod whose love of clay and membership in the Cape Cod Potters, Inc., binds them together. The range of work in the exhibition in Dennis depicts a wide range of functional, decorative, sculptural, traditional, and non-traditional pieces and demonstrates the many ways artists use this medium. Dan Finnegan, English-trained potter and founder of the Liberty Town Arts Workshop in Fredericksburg, VA, juried the exhibition.

Cape Cod Museum of Art, the regional art museum of Cape Cod, the Islands and Southeastern Massachusetts, is located off Route 6A, 60 Hope Lane, on the grounds of Cape Cod Center for the Arts, Dennis. Admission: $8, free for children 18 and under and museum members. Gallery hours: Thursday, 10 am - 8 pm; Friday - Saturday, 10 am -5 pm; and Sunday, noon - 5 pm. April 8-9. Cape Symphony Orchestra. Hyannis. Sat. 8pm., Sun. 3pm. Rachel Lee, outstanding violinist and rising star, returns to grace the CSO stage performing the delicate, and hauntingly beautiful Red Violin. Following this, Ms. Lee will perform Paganini's Concerto for Violin and Orchestra No. 1. Then the CSO performs the rousing Billy the Kid Suite by Aaron Copland and two Shostakovich pieces, Jazz Suite and Tahiti Trot Tea for Two. Adult tickets $26-$53; students 6.5 0-$13.25. April 14-15. Still Life with Iris. Harwich. Fri. at 11am & 7:30pm., Sat. at 2pm and 7:30pm. This fantasy adventure drama, the first play for young audiences to receive the Kennedy Center’s Fund for New American Plays Award, chronicles a young girl's quest to regain her memory and with it her home. With the help of the incredible people she meets along the way, Iris' crusade recovers more than her past. Admission $12-$16. At Harwich Junior Theatre. (508-432-2002 ext. 4)

April 28- 29. Night of New Works. Orleans. 8pm. Tickets $16. At Academy Playhouse. (508-255-1963)

April 28 through May 28. A Year with Frog and Toad. Harwich. Fri. & Sat. at 7:30 pm,Sundays at 4 pm. (Special Saturday matinees at 4 pm on May 3 and 10.) A jazzy, perky delight destined to become a classic.... a splashy and lavish family musical. Frog and Toad are nothing alike, yet they're best, BEST friends. Hope everyone had a great Super Bowl weekend. We were very fortunate to have neighbors in to celebrate the game with chili and all the fixings, plus some great deserts to cool off the heat of the chili.

If you still haven't made your reservations for 2009, please check our special's page for details for our 40% off during the spring on weekdays. Here are a couple of events for the beginning of April. We open the first weekend in April, so hope to see you then. Winter Wednesday Walks:

Join our hearty little group on Wednesday afternoons for a fun and informative nature walk on the Upper Cape led by Thornton W. Burgess Society Naturalist Patricia Gonser.

Meet at 1:00 pm at the Green Briar Nature Center in East Sandwich and travel together by van to different conservation areas each week. Walks end at 4:00 pm.

Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum Show Art Treasures

The Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum (PMPM) is proud to announce that it will be exhibiting world renowned art treasures for public viewing at a special winter opening.

On Valentines Day/President’s Day weekend, The PMPM will open its doors to the public with free admission to view five paintings that are on loan from the Town of Provincetown Art Collection.

These incredible works of art are on loan and being exhibited for the first time since the closing of Provincetown Town Hall due to the current renovation project.

The exhibition features the 1915 masterpiece by Charles W. Hawthorne, “The Crew of the Philomena.” Other works on display are by artists Max Bohm, Frederick Judd Waugh, William Halsall and George Elmer Browne. Hawthorne established the Cape Cod School of Art in 1899 and taught hundreds of artists who traveled to Provincetown to study with him until his untimely death in 1930 at the age of 58. Eventide Arts presents "Brian Morris & Friends"

Composer/songwriter Brian Morris appears in concert as part of the Eventide Arts "Voices of Cape Cod" series. Morris has been a professional composer for over 25years. His compositions have been heard on national television and radio, and in various other media. As as songwriter, he has won numerous awards, including two Grand Prize awards in Eventide’s annual "Songfest" competition, and First Place in the Great American Song Competition (Gospel category) in 2005.

Brian will be joined in this program by fellow singers and musicians well-known to Cape audiences. So join in on Saturday, April 4, 2009 at 7:30 PM & Sunday, April 5, 2009 at 2:30 PM.

Inspired by the eerie echoes of waves in the sea caves of Scotland, Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture depicts the atmosphere of a natural cathedral – an overwhelming vastness punctuated by strange sounds and colors. The utmost elegance, wit and fluency of Mendelssohn’s Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in E Minor are passionately expressed by violinist and Grammy Award nominee, Philippe Quint. With its fairies, elves and magical spells, A Midsummer Night’s Dream captures the magical tone of the Shakespeare play. Talented choral singers from Chorus pro Musica and accomplished Shakespeare actors bring an authenticity to the stage. A celebration of the Mendelssohn bicentennial (b. 1809).
